Data Binding to SelectedItem in a WPF Treeview 🌳

So, you want to retrieve the selected item in a WPF Treeview and bind it to a property in your Model? 🤔

You might think that using the SelectedItem property would do the trick, but it turns out that it's read-only and cannot be set from markup. 😞

But don't worry, I've got an easy solution for you! 🎉

The Problem 🚫

Let's take a look at the code snippet that generated the error:

<TreeView ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Model.Clusters}"
          ItemTemplate="{StaticResource ClusterTemplate}"
          SelectedItem="{Binding Path=Model.SelectedCluster}" />

The error you encountered was:

'SelectedItem' property is read-only and cannot be set from markup.

The Solution ✅

To work around this limitation, we can handle the SelectedItemChanged event in the code-behind file of our XAML. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Add the SelectedItemChanged event to your Treeview:

<TreeView ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Model.Clusters}"
          ItemTemplate="{StaticResource ClusterTemplate}"
          SelectedItemChanged="TreeView_OnSelectedItemChanged" />
  1. In the code-behind file of your XAML, add the event handler method TreeView_OnSelectedItemChanged:

private void TreeView_OnSelectedItemChanged(object sender, RoutedPropertyChangedEventArgs<object> e)
{
    Model.SelectedCluster = (Cluster)e.NewValue;
}

In this event handler method, we cast the NewValue of the RoutedPropertyChangedEventArgs to the appropriate type (Cluster in this case) and assign it to our Model.SelectedCluster property.

Voilà! 🎩 Now the selected item in your Treeview will be bound to the Model.SelectedCluster property.

Conclusion 🏁

Retrieving the selected item from a WPF Treeview and binding it to a property in your Model might seem tricky at first, but with the SelectedItemChanged event and a few lines of code, you can easily achieve the desired behavior.

Now, go ahead and give it a try in your own application! 🚀
